Firstly, a little about me. I’m not, never have been and don’t ever want to be a VAT inspector. I’m just a self builder who wrote some software ( Allsorts V3) to help me and others prepare my VAT refund. I ended up preparing quite a few claims for other self builders (mostly those that were running out of time) and thought I could offer fellow self builders a few tips about their claim.
Never take for granted the VAT on an invoice is correct. Check the VAT on any invoice you get at the time. It’s shocking how many companies (very large, national companies included) calculate VAT incorrectly. Sometimes, when the VAT is worked out incorrectly, there is only a £1 or £2 difference (it’s rare that £1 or £2 works in your favour, it’s generally the supplier that gains). But other times it can be £20, £40 or £27.43. How many people check they’ve paid the correct amount of VAT at the time? Not many.

Considering a 'Green' DIY project.. then why not opt for a a DIY Wind turbine? No, I'm not mad, yes, it can work. I've searched the web for DIY wind turbines - yes, I'm interested in the subject, but I want to save you some time when deciding whether to embark a wind turbine project. I want more people to produce their own electricity, so I needed to find some the best deals and good Information. That was the challenge, the reality was I found this task really hard. The first thing I noticed was the number of DIY wind turbine links all pointing to one site offering an e-book on the topic. - not really good enough, probably a scam. I started to dig deeper, many quality, not for profit links were pointing towards 'Hugh Piggott's' website and blog. It turns out Hugh is a bit of a pioneer when it comes to DIY wind turbines. Actually he is the daddy. ...

Mr Robert Fidler, 60 took a £50,000 gamble and two years to build his dream home on his surrey farm.
One problem. Mr Fidler didn't have any planning permission. Mr Fidler didn't actually apply for any planning permission, so he hid his newly built house, under tonnes of hay!

Sorry, I'm trying not to laugh as I write this..

Mr Fidler built the house in 2002 and removed the hay in 2006, thinkin ...

For most of us homeowners out there, the thought of making our own electricity doesn’t seem like an appealing or feasible effort. However, you’d be surprised with the kind of positive impact this would make on the environment and in your own life.
So.. How much can we pick up a cost effect solar system for? Lets put it to the test.

    Install your own Solar Panels

There is now a more favourable environment for self-build homes, according to one industry expert. Increased land availability, falling prices and cheaper materials and labour mean there is a real demand from homeowners who are frustrated by the current property market, explained Raymond Connor, chief executive of construction supplier BuildStore. "With a low supply of quality homes and such good savings to be made right now, in terms of land, labour rates and materials prices, there has never been a better time or more affordable time, to build your own house," he commented. Mr Connor called on the government and local authorities to recognise this trend and aid self-build projects. ...

Roof insulation is one of the easiest ways for DIY enthusiasts to save money on household bills, it has been claimed. According to the Guardian, DIY homeowners are able to save about £150 annually simply by installing insulation to their loft. In addition, consumers have been told that loft insulation is a relatively straightforward DIY job that can be done at "an extremely low cost". The newspaper advised: "If there is already some insulation up there, then be sure to top it up to 270mm, you could save around £45 a year on your heating bills." Meanwhile, cavity wall insulation has been identified as another sensible way to reduce the cost of energy bills. ...

We like to have our say, they are just our personal thoughts, based on a deeper understanding of DIY products and experience of Home improvements and self builds.
Enough said, here are our top 5 predictions to why the Britain’s home improvement market is about to explode.
    1) Get £12,000 to spend on Green products to reduce energy bills. As you may have heard, Ed Miliband, the UK Energy and Climate Change Secretary has announced a 'green home loans' scheme of up to £12,000 through DIY chains, but allows the homeowner to payback the cost of the loan to be paid off over time, as savings are made on energy bills. This may not sound attractive at first, but if we delve a little deeper and ponder on the facts (which are a little grey at the time of writing this) we can see that the loan will cover (for example) the insulation of the loft and solar panels. ...
